What Is a Consumer Unit?

The consumer unit — also called a fuse board or distribution board — is the central hub of your property's electrical installation. It contains the main switch, along with protective devices (MCBs, RCDs or RCBOs) for each circuit.

Modern consumer units use RCBOs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overcurrent Protection) to give each circuit its own independent protection. If one circuit develops a fault and trips, only that circuit is affected — the rest of the installation stays live. This is a significant practical and safety improvement over older boards.

Older consumer units — particularly rewirable fuse boards and early plastic units with MCBs and a single RCD — don't provide this level of protection. A single RCD protecting multiple circuits means that one fault can knock out multiple rooms simultaneously.

RCDs vs RCBOs — What's the Difference?

An RCD (Residual Current Device) detects small differences in current between live and neutral conductors — a sign that current is flowing through an unintended path, such as a person. RCDs trip very quickly to protect against electric shock.

An RCBO combines the function of an RCD and an MCB in a single device. Unlike an RCD protecting a group of circuits, each RCBO protects only its own circuit. This means a fault on one circuit doesn't affect any others — giving much better discrimination and avoiding nuisance trips cutting multiple rooms.

Current BS 7671 regulations strongly favour full RCBO protection. We install modern consumer units with individual RCBOs on every circuit as standard.

Signs You Need an Upgrade

Does Your Consumer Unit Need Replacing?

Old rewirable fuse board

If your consumer unit uses ceramic or porcelain fuses with wire rather than MCBs, it's time for an upgrade.

No RCD protection

Older boards with MCBs but no RCD or RCBO protection don't offer the same level of shock and fire protection as modern boards.

Insufficient circuits

Modern properties need more circuits than older boards were designed for. Overloaded circuits are a safety risk.

Failed EICR C2 for inadequate protection

A failed EICR citing inadequate RCD protection is one of the most common reasons for a consumer unit upgrade in Eltham properties.

Frequent tripping or blown fuses

If your board regularly trips or blows fuses, the installation may be overloaded or there may be an underlying fault.

Planning an extension or renovation

New circuits added to an old board may not comply with current regulations. A new consumer unit ensures a compliant installation.

What Does the Work Involve?

1

Survey & quote

We assess the existing installation, identify the number of circuits and any associated works required, and provide a fixed price.

2

Day of installation

The supply is isolated at the meter. The old unit is removed and the new consumer unit is installed and wired.

3

Testing & certification

All circuits are tested in accordance with BS 7671 and a full electrical installation certificate is issued.

4

Building Control notification

As a notifiable job, we register the work with the relevant Building Control body and provide you with the completion certificate.
